Pedal kickback is the backward movement or pressure you can sometimes feel through the pedals when a mountain bike’s rear suspension compresses. It is a normal result of the suspension and drivetrain interacting, although some bikes produce more of it than others.
What Causes Pedal Kickback?
As the rear suspension moves through its travel, the rear axle follows a specific path. On many full-suspension bikes, this movement temporarily increases the distance between the rear axle and the bottom bracket. This is known as chain growth. Because the chain cannot stretch, the additional tension can pull against the chainring and try to rotate the cranks backward. When that force reaches the rider’s feet, it is called pedal kickback.
What Does It Feel Like?
Pedal kickback can feel like a small backward tug through the pedals or a brief resistance against your feet. In stronger cases, it may make the rear suspension feel slightly firmer or less active. It is most likely to be noticed during:
- Slow-speed impacts
- Rough technical climbs
- Heavy braking over uneven terrain
- Large suspension compressions
- Situations where the rear hub is engaged
At normal trail speeds, the rotating rear wheel often allows the freehub to remain disengaged. This reduces the amount of chain tension transferred back to the cranks, which is why many riders rarely notice pedal kickback.
What Affects Pedal Kickback?
Suspension Design
Bikes with more rearward axle movement usually create more chain growth and have a greater potential for pedal kickback. However, that same chain growth can also improve pedalling efficiency by helping the suspension resist bobbing.
Freehub Engagement
High-engagement hubs respond quickly when you begin pedalling, but they also have less free movement between engagement points. This can make it more likely for chain tension to reach the cranks during suspension compression.
Lower-engagement hubs may reduce how often this happens, but they also create more delay before pedalling force reaches the rear wheel.
Gearing
The selected rear cog and chainring size can affect how much crank movement is created by chain growth. This is one reason pedal feedback may feel more noticeable in certain climbing gears.
Idler Pulleys
Many high-pivot bikes use an idler pulley to control chain growth. By routing the chain closer to the bike’s main suspension pivot, the idler reduces how much suspension movement pulls against the cranks.
Is Pedal Kickback a Problem?
For most riders, pedal kickback is not something to worry about. Modern full-suspension bikes are designed to balance suspension sensitivity, pedalling efficiency and drivetrain feedback. A bike may show noticeable pedal kickback in a suspension chart while producing very little feedback under actual riding conditions. It only becomes a concern if the pedals regularly push against your feet or the rear suspension feels restricted when moving through rough terrain.
Can Pedal Kickback Be Reduced?
Pedal kickback can be managed through suspension design, idler placement, hub engagement and drivetrain components. Some riders also use drivetrain decoupling devices that allow limited chainring movement. However, replacing parts purely to reduce pedal kickback is rarely necessary. Correct suspension setup, tire pressure and bike fit will usually make a much bigger difference to how a bike performs.
The Bottom Line
Pedal kickback happens when suspension compression creates chain growth and pulls the cranks backward. It is a real part of full-suspension mountain bike design, but its effect is often minor during normal riding. Unless you can clearly feel the pedals fighting against your feet, pedal kickback should not be a major factor when choosing or setting up a mountain bike.
