Brake fade happens when your braking system gets too hot and starts losing performance. On long, steep descents, repeated braking creates a lot of heat in the pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid. Use Larger Rotors
Larger rotors provide more braking leverage and more surface area to manage heat. Common MTB rotor sizes include:

For aggressive trail, enduro, downhill, or e-MTB riding, moving to a larger rotor can significantly improve braking consistency on long descents. Always check your fork, frame, and brake manufacturer's maximum supported rotor size before upgrading.
Choose the Right Brake Pads
Brake pad compound makes a big difference.
Organic pads are usually quieter and offer good initial bite, but they can struggle more when temperatures get high.
Metallic pads generally handle heat better and are often a better choice for long descents, enduro, downhill, and heavier riders.
If brake fade is a regular issue, metallic pads are worth considering.
Avoid Dragging the Brakes
Holding light brake pressure for an entire descent keeps generating heat with very little opportunity for the system to cool. When terrain allows, brake harder for shorter periods and release the brakes between braking zones. That gives the rotors and pads a chance to shed some heat.
Use Both Brakes
Relying too heavily on one brake concentrates heat into one system. Using both brakes spreads the braking load between the front and rear, helping maintain more consistent performance. Your front brake still provides most of the stopping power, but balanced braking is important on long descents.
Keep Your Brakes Maintained
Poorly maintained brakes can fade sooner. Before long or aggressive rides, check:
- Brake pad thickness
- Rotor condition
- Rotor thickness
- Brake fluid
- Lever feel
- Pad and rotor contamination
If your lever feels spongy or inconsistent, the brake may need to be bled.
Bed In New Pads Properly
New pads and rotors need to be properly bedded in before they reach full performance. Bedding creates an even layer of pad material on the rotor and helps improve braking power and consistency. Always follow the brake manufacturer's recommended bedding procedure after installing new pads or rotors.
Make Sure Your Brakes Match Your Riding
If you're regularly riding long, steep descents, lightweight brakes may simply not have enough heat capacity. Four-piston brakes, larger rotors, and metallic pads are common choices for riders focused on:
- Enduro
- Downhill
- Bike park riding
- E-MTB
- Long alpine descents
Your braking system should match your bike, rider weight, terrain, and riding style.
